Scope

4.1m main worktop & 2.6m x 1.6m feature island

Commissioned by kitchen designers Griggs and Mackay, AFJONES manufactured and installed heavyweight stone worktops for a residential refurbishment in Henley-on-Thames.

Working with highly durable quartzite, oversized dimensions and restricted site access, this project required strict logistical planning and precise technical fabrication to execute the designer’s exact vision.

Material Specification & Technical Design

Blue Jeans
Quartzite

The chosen material was Blue Jeans Quartzite, finished with a textured, leathered surface. While this provides a clean, light aesthetic with distinctive blue veining, quartzite is notoriously hard and difficult to cut.

Machining it required specialist tooling and exact calibration in our workshops.

Heavyweight Dimensions

Oversized
Slabs

The kitchen layout demanded a 4.1m x 600mm main worktop and a large 2.6m x 1.6m feature island.

Handling and processing stone slabs of this scale is a heavyweight operation that relies on highly accurate initial surveys and templating to ensure a first-time fit.

Concealed Structural Support

A Hidden
Bracket

The island design included a significant stone overhang. To ensure stability without relying on visible, unsightly support legs, we designed and fabricated a custom three-pronged, fan-shaped metal bracket.

Fixed directly to the underside, this provided rigid support while remaining entirely hidden.

The AFJONES Approach

End-to-End
Production

This installation highlights the necessity of an end-to-end stone service. By controlling every phase, from the initial site survey and material procurement through to CNC fabrication and site fixing, we eliminate variables and guarantee tight tolerances are met across the board.

Delivering oversized, heavyweight stone into finished residential properties often involves restricted access. Our teams meticulously plan the logistics, lifting routes and handling operations well in advance, ensuring delicate execution and safe installation regardless of site constraints.

The intersection of art and science: we respect the natural character of the raw material while applying rigorous technical logic and advanced machinery to solve practical interior challenges.

The Henley-on-Thames kitchen is a highly durable, functional space delivered strictly to the designer’s brief. By designing hidden structural supports and navigating difficult site logistics, AFJONES ensured the practical demands of the installation never compromised the beauty of the finished stone.
