The Belvedere (Carvings)

Carved pediment, festoons and relief panels
Client: Private Client
Main Contractor: A F Jones Stonemasons
Architect: Jonathan Lees Architects LLP
Location: Oxfordshire
Summary: Natural Stone Awards 2020 Winner - Craftmanship
Stone: York Stone (Woodkirk)

All of the carvings were individualised for the client, including the flowers and leaves from the local environment.  The garlands and festoons (swags) were shaped working from sketch drawing intent. Much of the core wasting of the stone was achieved through our sophisticated CNC routers.  This process vastly improves the health & safety conditions for our carving masons, whilst in no way diminishing the incredible skills needed to finish such a building.

Assembling the building on-site with heavy lifting of fragile components to a fine jointed conclusion demonstrates the full gamut of A F Jones skills. We are so proud of the whole team for achieving this work of art – for it is both an immense achievement and an incredible work of art.   The Craftsmanship Award for Craftmanship from the Stone Federation is a testament to the skills and care employed throughout.
